A sentence is a group of related words conveying some meaning or expressing one complete thought. There are four types of sentence:

Sentences conveying some information.

(1) The gardener waters the plants.

(I1) Shella is singing a song.

2. Interrogative sentences;  

Sentences used to ask questions.

(1) What are you doing?

(II) Is he leaving for Karachi tomorrow?

3. Imperative sentence;

 Sentences conveying a wish, an appeal, a command,

a request.

(1) Please take your seat.

(11) Do not enter my room again.

(III) May you live long I

4. Exclamatory sentences;

Sentences exclaiming feeling or thought in a state of


(1) What a pretty child I

(il) How beautifully Majid executed his strokes I

Subject and Predicate:

A sentence can be divided into two parts. The part which

contains the person or thing we are talking about is called the subject.

The part that contains what we say about the

person or the thing is called the predicate.


1. Shamil has written a number of novels:

Subject: Shamil

Predicate: has written a number of novels.

2. Tomb will not build in a day.

Subject: Tomb

Predicate: will not build in a day.

Note: There is no subject in imperative sentences because it is understood.


Do it at once.

The speaker in fact means “You do it at once”. “You”

is, therefore, the subject.

The Phrase and Clause:

It does not convey

A Phrase is a part of a sentence a complete thought or a statement. It does not have a subject or predicate.

Example: “of great value”

It helps in making a complete sentence.

“It is a book of great value.”

A Clause is a part of a sentence but, unlike a phrase, contains a subject and a predicate.


This is the building that Stone designed. “This is the building”

and “Stone designed” are both clauses, “that” is the joining word.
